Cuba

Dogs sleep on the motorway as a Russian Lada roars past, brightly painted in the incongruous colors of the tropics. Behind it a 1954 Cadillac belches black from its impossibly large and beautifully contoured frame. The two Cold War classics coexist here so naturally that it’s curious to imagine that this is the motoring equivalent of seeing a penguin and a polar bear on the same ice floe. After a century split evenly between US and Russian influence, and with Fidel having shuffled off stage left, Cuba is slowly rousing itself as the Cuban Revolution moves on to its next stage.

As well as having the usual Caribbean attractions in abundance – from the white sand and palm-fringed beaches of Varadero and Playas del Este to the lush scenery of Isla de la Juventud – Cuba has one of the world’s most exciting (and bloody) histories, extraordinary musical and dance traditions all of its own and a rich national architecture that never ceases to astound. Its vibrant capital, Havana, is famous for its kicking Caribbean nightlife, exuberant residents and beautifully restored old city; colonial gem Trinidad will enchant you with its intimacy and relaxed vibe. Perched improbably on the island's eastern tip, isolated and intriguing Baracoa is Cuba's very own Shangri-La.

Yes, it’s harder work than most of its neighbors, and yes, the government is cashing in on every penny you spend, but the reason people come to Cuba again and again, rife as it is with contradictions and intrigue, is that there’s simply nowhere else like it on earth.

Travel Alert: Travellers should be aware that parts of Cuba are still recovering from Hurricanes Gustav and Ike that struck the island in August-September 2008. Check out Safe Travel or the Thorn Tree forum for advice from travellers.

Evanescence/Amy Lee

Amy Lynn Hartzler (née Lee; born December 13, 1981), best known as Amy Lee, is an American singer-songwriter and classically-trained pianist. She is co-founder and lead vocalist of the alternative metal band Evanescence. Her influences range from classical musicians such as Mozart to modern artists like Björk, Tori Amos, Danny Elfman,[1] and Plumb.

Evanescence was founded by singer, pianist and songwriter Amy Lee and former lead guitarist and songwriter Ben Moody. The two met at a youth camp in Arkansas.

They went through several names, including Childish Intentions and Stricken, before deciding on the name Evanescence (meaning the act of vanishing, synonymous to disappearance).

After releasing a few EPs, their first major album Fallen has been certified 6x Platinum , spent 43 weeks in the Billboard Top 10 and has sold over 14 million copies worldwide.

On October 22, 2003, Moody left the band abruptly in the middle of a European tour. The reasons for his departure were reportedly "creative differences."

Evanescence is set to release their second album, titled The Open Door, which will feature 13 tracks.

Belize

Tourist Info: If you are looking for a gorgeous seaside vacation, the Cayes of Belize are the place to go. Ambergris Caye is an island in the Belizean keys in the Caribbean Sea. It is the largest of the islands, thus there are more resorts, and it is easier to get to. Rest assured, however, that this is not an overbuilt resort city like Miami. Any resort not directly in town will offer solitude and beauty. The other islands are even more quiet and isolated, but there may not be as much to do (i.e. daily diving excursions, etc.) The Ambergris Caye is a picture post card setting with white sandy beaches, a clear turquoise sea, and palm trees with coconuts.

The best relaxation of your life can take place on this island but if you’re worried you may be too relaxed there are many fun activities that one can do. I highly recommend going snorkeling or scuba diving at the barrier reef (the largest reef in the Western Hemisphere and the second largest in the world after Australia). You will see exotic sea creatures including sharks. Yes, sharks swimming right below you! DO NOT FORGET YOUR WATER CAMERA. If diving the ocean floor isn’t for you, there are many different water sports which can keep you busy, or, you can rent a bike or golf cart (the principle mode of transportation on the island) and check out the island.

You should staying in a hotel that has private cabana thatched huts on the sand, it is a unique and enjoyable experience.

If you’re wondering how to get to San Pedro from New York one must make a stop over at Miami International and then fly to Belize City (about a 1-1/2 flight from Miami). Once in Belize you will have the option to take a 2 hour boat ride or a 10 minute plane ride to the island. Taking the plane, but just to warn you it’s a tiny plane with approximately 6-7 seats including the pilot.

One last recommendation…go to Guatemala while you’re already in Belize, it’s only a 2 hour drive from Belize City.

Kevin Connolly

Living Without Legs, Without a Wheelchair

He often travels by balancing his torso on a skateboard, and moving expertly through the streets of the cities he visits. From the skateboard, he has taken more than 32,000 photos of the stares he attracts. Some are displayed on an Internet site, therollingexhibition.com. They are riveting, sometimes humorous, examples of human nature in different cultures, where, with each stare, people also form quick and even fanciful interpretations of who Connolly is, and why.

Connolly is a senior who studies film and photography at Montana State University. He has short-cropped brown hair, good looks and an affable, open demeanor. His upper torso is fully formed, large-boned, muscular and trim. His internal organs are healthy.

He rejected the prosthetic legs with which he was fitted when he was young, because they were uncomfortable and made it difficult for him to move freely. Instead, he wears what he calls a "boot" to cover his lower body. It is a rounded device that fits perfectly around his lower torso and protects it as he moves.

Marilyn Monroe

Marilyn Monroe personified Hollywood glamour with an unparalleled glow and energy that enamored the world. Although she was an alluring beauty with voluptuous curves and a generous pout, Marilyn was more than a '50s sex goddess. Her apparent vulnerability and innocence, in combination with an innate sensuality, has endeared her to the global consciousness. She dominated the age of movie stars to become, without question, the most famous woman of the 20th Century.

Malcolm X

Malcolm Little; May 19, 1925 – February 21, 1965, also known as El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz,[1] was an African American Muslim minister, public speaker, and human rights activist. To his admirers, he was a courageous advocate for the rights of African Americans, a man who indicted white America in the harshest terms for its crimes against black Americans.[2] His detractors accused him of preaching racism and violence.[3][4][5] He has been described as one of the greatest and most influential African Americans in history.[6][7][8]

Malcolm X was born in Omaha, Nebraska. By the time he was 13, his father had died and his mother had been committed to a mental hospital. After living in a series of foster homes, Malcolm X became involved in the criminal underworld in Boston and New York. In 1945, Malcolm X was sentenced to eight to ten years in prison.

While in prison, Malcolm X became a member of the Nation of Islam. After his parole in 1952, he became one of the Nation's leaders and chief spokesmen. For nearly a dozen years, he was the public face of the Nation of Islam. Tension between Malcolm X and Elijah Muhammad, head of the Nation of Islam, led to Malcom X's departure from the organization in March 1964.

After leaving the Nation of Islam, Malcolm X became a Sunni Muslim and made a pilgrimage to Mecca. He traveled extensively throughout Africa and the Middle East. He founded Muslim Mosque, Inc., a religious organization, and the secular, black nationalist Organization of Afro-American Unity. Less than a year after he left the Nation of Islam, Malcolm X was assassinated while giving a speech in New York.
