Jayson Tyler Brûlé

Jayson Tyler Brûlé known as Tyler Brule (born 1968 in Winnipeg, Manitoba) is a Canadian-born journalist, entrepreneur and magazine publisher.

The only child of Canadian football player Paul Brule[1] (of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, Rough Riders, and Alouettes), and Virge Brule, an artist,[2] he moved to the United Kingdom in 1989 and trained as a journalist with the BBC. He subsequently wrote for The Guardian, Stern, The Sunday Times and Vanity Fair. After being shot by a sniper while covering the Afghanistan war in March 1994 and losing the use of his left hand, Brûlé left journalism and launched Wallpaper*, a style and fashion magazine which was one of the most influential launches of the 1990s. Time Warner bought it in 1997, and kept Brûlé on as editorial director. Two spin-off magazines were launched: "Line" addressing sports and "Spruce" covering fashion; both were discontinued after three issues. In 2001 he became the youngest ever recipient of the British Society of Magazine Editors' Lifetime Achievement Award.

In 2001 he was hired to design the "look and feel" of Swiss International Air Lines at their relaunch, after the collapse of Swissair.[3]

In May 2002, Brûlé left Wallpaper and concentrated on Winkmedia (now Winkreative), a design agency he founded in 1998.

In 2005, Brûlé hosted the TV media magazine The Desk on BBC Four. In 2006, he co-produced Counter Culture, a documentary series about cultural aspects of shopping, on the same channel.

He was a columnist for the Financial Times, The New York Times, and Neue Zürcher Zeitung am Sonntag. His "Fast Lane" column, which appeared in the weekend supplement of the Financial Times, covered his observations on travel, trends and high-end consumer goods gathered in the course of his travels during the week, which often seemed to involve visits to more than two continents.

In October 2006, he announced that he would create a new magazine, to be called Monocle, which launched February 15, 2007. In December 2006, he announced in "Fast Lane" that he would be taking a break from the column to work on projects. On February 14, 2007, the International Herald Tribune announced a "new weekly column on urbanism and global navigation" by Brûlé, starting on the 3rd of March.

On April 2nd 2008, it was announced that Brûlé will leave the International Herald Tribune to revive his weekly column, Fast Lane, on April 26, when FT Weekend relaunched.

According to UK fashion sources, Tyler Brule is rumored to be the main contributor in the forthcoming Abercrombie & Fitch Quarterly.

Also I thought this was interesting..

Tyler Brûlé’s Monocle magazine gets more and more interesting. The April 2009 edition focuses on the state of retail and talks about what drives retail success in these tough times.

Ten key attributes in the retail experience according to Monocle are:

1. Service minded, smartly dressed, enthusiastic staff
2. Obsessive attention to detail
3. A memorable welcoming scent in the air
4. Good music in the background
5. Flattering lighting
6. Treats with all purchases
7. Impeccable packaging
8. An inviting façade
9. A unique original product mix
10. A passion to constantly innovate

So....

Bronte Baths, Sydney

Bronte bath, Sydney

One of around 40 ocean pools dotted along the Sydney coast, Bronte baths were built in 1887. Also known as Bond Ocean Pool after the famed lifeguard and swimming instructor Major John Bond, the pool was adapted for lap and competitive swimming by using a turning board to define a rectangular course within the pool.

Vampire Weekend

Vampire Weekend is an indie pop/rock band with Afro-pop influences. Bandmates Ezra Koenig (vocals, guitar), Rostam Batmanglij (keyboards, vocals), Christopher Tomson (drums) and Chris Baio (bass) formed February 2006 in New York City, New York, United States.

Their self-titled debut album was released on January 29, 2008 on XL Recordings to, so far, critical success and the single A-Punk garnering heavy airplay on Alternative radio stations throughout the US. They are quickly garnering comparisons to Paul Simon’s Graceland for the Afro-pop style, as well as to The Kinks and NYC’s The Walkmen. The album itself is also drawing comparisons to The Strokes’ 2001 debut, Is This It, which also broke through at the time for its pop simplicity and ingenuity.

Vampire Weekend received much buzz from local blogs throughout 2007 during their rise to a record deal. Rolling Stone placed Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa at number 57 for the top 100 songs of 2007. They also garnered much local buzz in the summer of 2007 with their song Oxford Comma, which gripes about prep grammar, Lil’ Jon, and coal drama. They are currently on their first major tour, covering North America and ending off at Coachella 2008 in Indio, California.

They are self-proclaimed “specialists in the following styles: ‘Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa’, ‘Upper West Side Soweto’, ‘Campus’, and ‘Oxford Comma Riddim.’”

Emory Douglas @ New Musume

Emory Douglas: Black Panther
Multimedia available
An Exhibition Curated by Sam Durant for the New Museum

Some of Emory Douglas’s images are nearly forty years old, but they are still as powerful as when Douglas first created them. They are dangerous pictures, and they were meant to change the world.

Emory Douglas was the Revolutionary Artist of the Black Panther Party and subsequently became its Minister of Culture, part of the national leadership. He created the overall design of the Black Panther, the Party’s weekly newspaper, and oversaw its layout and production until the Black Panthers disbanded in 1979–80. Throughout the ’60s and ’70s, Douglas made countless artworks, illustrations, and cartoons, which were reproduced in the paper and distributed as prints, posters, cards, and even sculptures. All of them utilized a straightforward graphic style and a vocabulary of images that would become synonymous with the Party and the issues it fought for.

“Emory Douglas: Black Panther” includes a wide variety of Douglas’s work done while a member of the Black Panther Party. Curated by the Los Angeles artist Sam Durant, whose work often deals with political and cultural subjects in American history, the show includes approximately 165 posters, newspapers, and prints dating from 1967–76. Durant met Emory Douglas in 2002 and began working on a book of Douglas’s work, which resulted in a monograph published in 2007. Two years later Durant curated “Black Panther: The Revolutionary Art of Emory Douglas” at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, which serves as a model for the exhibition at the New Museum.

Emory Douglas to Collaborate with Teens on Commissioned Community Mural in Harlem

In conjunction with the exhibition “Emory Douglas: Black Panther,” the New Museum, the Studio Museum in Harlem, and Groundswell, a community organization, will co-produce a new mural to be installed on 122nd Street and Third Avenue in Harlem, New York City. The mural, titled What We Want, What We Believe, will be a permanent public artwork— and Douglas’s first in New York City. The mural team will consist of up to fifteen teens involved with the New Museum’s G: Class student program and the Studio Museum, the majority of whom will be employed by the New York City Department of Youth and Community Development, through the Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP). Douglas will work with the youth for two weeks, teaching the history of the larger Black Power Movement, conducting master print-making workshops, and leading discussions with youth participants. Over a period of two months, artist educators from the New Museum, the Studio Museum, and Groundswell will provide youth with tutorials on the social and political history that gave rise to the Black Panther Party and the Movement, as well as the history of printmaking and mural painting. A dedication of the finished mural is anticipated in early September 2009.

The Body Can Beat Terminal Cancer — Sometimes

They should be dead. But a tiny number of people conquer lethal diseases.
John Matzke was just 30 years old when he was told that he had only 18 months to live. At 6 feet 4 inches tall, with blue eyes and broad shoulders, Matzke cut an impressive figure. He’d been a football player at Dartmouth College, where he studied geology. That was also where he met his wife, Lyn, who worked in town. In 1973, Matzke and Lyn moved to Wisconsin to run a small homestead, where they grew organic vegetables and raised chickens and a pig. Just seven weeks after the birth of his first son, in 1974, Matzke noticed a lump in his armpit. A biopsy showed that the lump was malignant melanoma, a particularly fatal form of skin cancer. He would have that tumor and then a few others removed by surgeons. By 1984, the cancer had spread to his lung. Having served in the Army’s Fifth Armored Division in Ulm, Germany, Matzke went to the Veterans Administration hospital in White River Junction, Vermont, to see his oncologist, Joseph F. O’Donnell. Knowing that his patient’s chances of surviving the cancer were slim—and would only lessen with each passing day—O’Donnell urged him to undergo immediate treatment. The oncologist told Matzke that once melanoma invades an internal organ like the lung, the invariable outcome is death—usually within months—without immediate treatment. Even with treatment, his outlook was guarded. Only half of all melanoma patients with lung metastases are alive 30 months after surgery. But Matzke didn’t follow his doctor’s recommendation. Instead, he took a month off to strengthen his body for the treatment that he knew would most likely be a grueling ordeal. He went on long hikes in the mountains, he ate healthy foods, and he meditated. He also spent a lot of time picturing himself healthy and visualizing good strong blood cells destroying the cancer in his body.

Also Health Tips...

Recently, Edward Fujimoto, Wellness Program Manager at Castle Hospital, was on a TV program to explain plastic health hazard. He talked about dioxins and how bad they are for us & how Dioxins are highly poisonous to the cells of our bodies. Don't freeze your plastic. Bottles with water in them as this releases dioxins from the plastic.

  • No plastic containers in microwave.
  • No water bottles in freezer.
  • A dioxin chemical causes cancer, especially breast cancer.
  • we should not be heating our food in the microwave using plastic containers...This especially applies to foods that contain fat. He said that the combination of fat, high heat, and plastics releases dioxin into the food and ultimately into the cells of the body...Instead, he recommends using glass, such as Corning Ware, Pyrex or ceramic
containers for heating food... You get the same results, only without
the dioxin. So such things as TV dinners, instant Ramen and soups, etc.,
should be removed from the container and heated in something else.
Paper isn't bad but you don't know what is in the paper.
It's just safer to use tempered glass, Corning Ware, etc.
  • He also states, while ago some of the fast food restaurants moved away from the foam containers to paper. The dioxin problem is one of the reasons...Also, he pointed out that plastic wrap, such as Saran, is just as dangerous when placed over foods to be cooked in the microwave. As the food is nuked, the high heat causes poisonous toxins to actually melt out of the plastic wrap and drip into the food. Cover food with a paper towel instead.

Texting and Driving Will Seriously F@#k You Up!

There’s been all sorts of publicity this week about a recent study conducted by the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute analyzing the dangers posed by texting and driving. The research was conducted in a very scientifical manner: by placing video cameras in the cabs of 100 long-distance semis; watching how the drivers responded to what we in the auto journo biz call “Oh Shit Moments” (OSMs); and then analyzing how these reactions differed when the truckers were, or were not, engaged in the two-thumbed dance. The results? These professional drivers were 23 times more likely to wreck when they were sending messages than when they weren’t. Now I only took one day of Statistics 101, but I think that’s like a 23,000-percent risk increase.
